All students receive an art grade on their report card. Grades k-3 are on the reporting system of a 3+, 3,2, and a 1. Grades 4 and 5 are on the O, S and N system. There is also a section for behavior/learning skills for all grade levels.
Just for your information, grades can change from quarter to quarter depending on the projects and materials that are used. Remember also that I only see the students one day a week for 45 minutes, so the hope is that I will at least see them 9 times but sometimes we are lucky if its 7. This is also why the schedule rolls (Mondays are not always art days etc.).
My personal philosophy on grading/teaching in the elementary classroom, especially k-2, is that the goal is for the children to experiment and learn how to use the tools and materials on different projects. Some students will find they are better at drawing or better at painting or better at clay and some will discover that math is their thing.
The first half of the year is built on introducing materials and how they are used properly. Each time we use them our skills should grow stronger. Earning a 2 means that they are learning skills, we are always progressing. In the upper grades, 3-5, we should know the basic skills and we work using those techniques and the elements and principles of art to create our own masterpieces. A large part of the grade is also craftsmanship, our neatness in putting things together.
If you click on the link below you will be able to see the rubric that is associated with grades k-3 for each quarter on the reportcard and the 'meaning of the 3,2, and 1
